The Children's Society: Family Support Groups (substance misuse)
We deliver family support groups and one-to-one support across Essex for those affected by a family or friend's substance use. Led by a professional facilitator, the aim of the group is to empower the families living in these circumstances. Provided with information on what addiction is and how it affects people physically, mentally and emotionally; the group will learn how to support a family member and set rules that allow both to have clearer objectives and an overview of a healthy family relationship.
The groups will not exceed ten attendants and will allow access to one-to-one support before, during and after completion of the course. The groups are accessed through referral form only by self or professional.
These groups consist of a 7 week programme covering modules that include: Boundaries and consequences, positive behaviour, drug awareness education, appropriate support of users, addiction information, and coping and distraction techniques. Daytime and evening run groups. These are in areas where the highest concentration of referrals are located. But those interested in attending the groups are welcome to attend any group they can travel to.
