The Children's Society: CHHAT (Community Hidden Harm Awareness Team)

The Community Hidden Harm Awareness Team (CHHAT) is a project of The Children’s Society East, working with young people across Essex aged 8-19 years (will work up to age 25 if identified SEN needs) who are affected by parental substance use (also known as Hidden Harm). This includes parental alcohol, illegal drug and legal drug misuse.

If a young person is using substances themselves then please refer to EYPDAS. Support offered following assessment includes one to one support, group work, activity days and liaising with professionals

Who can use this service?

Anyone can refer into the service with the young persons permission. The service is delivered countywide (except Southend and Thurrock). We can also work with yp where there is historic parental substance misuse.

How are services delivered?

Services are delivered out in the community at a venue where the young person feels happy to meet. Children and YP affected by parental/carer substance/alcohol misuse The young person themselves must be aware of referral and consent to support around Hidden harm.
